Retire Happy What You Can Do Now to Guarantee a Great Retirement by Attorneys Richard Stim & Ralph Warner

When planning for retirement, it’s easy to become preoccupied with stock portfolios, 401(k) balances and doomsday predictions about baby boomer’s lack of savings. But happiness in retirement isn’t about how much cash you can manage to sock away before the age of 65. Everyone wants a comfortable retirement—but most also plan to have some fun, maintain an active social life, and enjoy a healthy old age.

In Retire Happy: What You Can Do Now to Guarantee a Great Retirement, author Rich Stim shows readers how to become rich in the ways that matter most. He encourages future retirees to balance financial concerns with an enriching lifestyle by cultivating interests outside work, leading a healthier lifestyle, revitalizing family relationships, and more. Retire Happy helps readers prepare for retirement—not just financially, but in every aspect of their lives.

The PsychiatryOnline Ebook of the Month is entitled Managing Metabolic Abnormalities in the Psychiatrically Ill: A Clinical Guide for Psychiatrists, edited by Richard A. Bermudes, M.D., Paul E. Keck Jr., M.D., and Susan L. McElroy, M.D

This book addresses an important unmet need of patients with both mental disorders and medical illness—namely, the lack of integration of general medical care with psychiatric care and the related problem of barriers to collaboration and communication among health care providers. Managing Metabolic Abnormalities in the Psychiatrically Ill is the first book to provide a current review of the relationships among psychiatric illnesses, metabolic abnormalities, and treatment, focusing on how clinicians can tailor care to those doubly-afflicted patients.

“Metabolic disturbances represent perhaps the major medical concern impacting patients with psychiatric conditions, yet many psychiatrists are still struggling with how to best manage these common problems. In this excellent text, Drs. Keck, Bermudes, and McElroy have compiled practical, relevant information for managing metabolic abnormalities and the related medical issues in psychiatric patients that practitioners will find timely, useful and important in their day-to-day practice. The editors have gathered an outstanding group of experts to write clear descriptions and recommendations that are easily incorporated into psychiatric care. I recommend this book highly.”—Stephen M. Strakowski, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, Neuroscience & Biomedical Engineering; Director, Center for Imaging Research, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

March eBooks of the Month

March 4th, 2008 by elizabethshultz

The NetLibrary Ebook of the Month is entitled From the Primaries to the Polls:
How to Repair America’s Broken Presidential Nomination Process

by Thomas Gangale

America’s presidential nominating process is inherently unfair and exclusive, yielding undue weight and privilege to the states that vote in the earliest rounds. More and more states are beating down the door to vote earlier, trying to redress the inequity on a state-by-state basis. In the ensuing free-for-all, the presidential primary schedule has become so front-loaded that the anointed “front-runner” with the biggest war chest in each of the major parties is the de facto nominee.

The PsychiatryOnline Ebook of the Month is entitled The Early Stages of Schizophrenia, edited by Robert B. Zipursky, M.D., and S. Charles Schulz, M.D.

In sharp contrast to the prevailing belief during the past century that schizophrenia inevitably results in a progressive deteriorating clinical course, research since the early 1980s shows that early intervention can significantly improve the long-term outcome of this complex illness. With very early treatment, many affected individuals can achieve an excellent recovery.

The work of 19 experts in the field of schizophrenia research is available in this single, powerful volume that introduces the concept of early intervention and describes the clinical approaches most likely to facilitate the fullest degree of recovery. With its dramatically different perspective on the potential long-term outcome of a still-baffling illness, this volume is a must-read for mental health practitioners and educators, psychiatry residents, and family members of affected individuals.

February eBooks of the Month

February 1st, 2008 by elizabethshultz

The NetLibrary Ebook of the Month is entitled Science and Technology in World History by James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn

This bestselling textbook may be the single most influential study of the historical relationship between science and technology ever published. Tracing this relationship from the dawn of civilization through the twentieth century, James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn argue that technology as “applied science” emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies.
